Alien

Here’s a little mood piece I painted based on James Cameron’s Aliens. I loved the light, or lack thereof, in the film. The photography, the lighting, the effects, even the script, all still stand up today. It's a hugely influential movie for this generation of artists and filmmakers. I even enjoyed the graphic novels when I was a kid. I rarely see an Alien illustration that doesn't make me smile. A lot of 80s and 90s action cinema had this blue-ish tint, and that has become a feature of a lot of things that I shoot. For this painting I wanted to practice ambience, smoke, airborne particles, highlights and air density, rather than extreme detail. I think if you get the larger shapes and lighting right, the rest almost takes care of itself.
